Short description

What is Clavulin?

Clavulin is an antibiotic consisting of two components: Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic of the semi-synthetic type, it is active against different strains: gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms.

The presence of Clavulanic acid in the drug protects Amoxicillin from degradation due to the action of β-lactamases and expands the spectrum of Amoxicillin antibacterial action, including many types of microorganisms resistant to Amoxicillin and other penicillins and cephalosporins.

What is Clavulin 875/125 mg used for?

Clavulin is a drug that is used in a variety of bacterial infections, especially in the treatment of conditions such as:

  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Severe periodontal abscess with spreading cellulitis
  • Acute and chronic cystitis
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Animal bites
  • Exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute otitis media
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Inflammation of the skin (especially cellulitis)
  • Bone and joint infections, especially osteomyelitis.

Clavulin should not be withdrawn after improvement of the condition, it is necessary to adhere strictly to the doctor's prescription.

Contraindications

The drug should not be used if the patient has at least one of the following conditions:

  • hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or other ingredients of the drug;
  • hypersensitivity to other penicillins;
  • a history of jaundice or liver problems caused by taking Amoxicillin or Clavulanic acid;
  • severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction (anaphylaxis) in the past to another beta-lactam drug such as cephalosporin, carbapenem, or monobactam;
  • severe kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
  • mononucleosis (a viral infection characterized by involvement of lymphatic organs);
  • phenylketonuria (a biochemical disorder in the body that is associated with the accumulation of the amino acid phenylalanine in various organs and tissues, which can cause CNS damage).

Clavulin can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives – this is worth considering if you are being treated with an antibiotic and taking birth control and are not planning a pregnancy.

If you are pregnant or your baby is breastfed, and you have a bacterial disease, be sure to consult your doctor before using Clavulin antibiotic for the correct treatment.

During pregnancy, Clavulin 875/125 mg should only be used when absolutely necessary. Since Amoxicillin penetrates the placental barrier, pregnant women are advised to consider another drug.

Dosage and administration

The range of suggested doses depends on the expected pathogens and their sensitivity to antibacterial agents, the severity of the disease and localization of infection, age, body weight and kidney function of the patient.

The calculation is made according to body weight, if the patient weighs more than 40 kg, the daily dose can be 1750 mg of Amoxicillin and 250 mg of Clavulanic acid. This is about two tablets, which can be divided into 2 times.

For children with a weight less than 40 kg, the maximum daily dose is from 1000-2800 Amoxicillin mg and 143-400 mg Clavulanic acid.

If large doses of Amoxicillin must be administered for treatment, other forms of the drug should be used to avoid prescribing excessive doses of Clavulanic acid.

The duration of therapy is determined by the patient's clinical response to treatment. Some infections (e.g., osteomyelitis) require long-term treatment.

Dosage in patients with impaired renal function is intended only for the treatment of patients with creatinine clearance of more than 30 ml/min.

The tablet should be swallowed whole without chewing. If necessary, you can break it in half and swallow the halves without chewing.

For optimal absorption and to reduce possible side effects from the digestive tract should be taken at the beginning of meals.

The duration of treatment is determined individually. Clavulin 875/125 mg should not be continued for more than two weeks unless your doctor recommends it.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take your next dose before 4 hours. Do not use a double dose to make up for taking a forgotten tablet.

Side effects

Although effective, the drug may cause a variety of side effects, including:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • diarrhea;
  • Increased concentration of liver enzymes, hepatitis, jaundice (mostly in the elderly);
  • candidiasis of mucous membranes and skin;
  • headache, dizziness;
  • seizures;
  • blood composition disorder;
  • hypersensitivity reactions;
  • skin manifestations of allergies;
  • crystalluria;
  • interstitial nephritis.

If such symptoms occur, you should stop taking Clavulin immediately.

What you should know about brand and generic drug alternates.
Prescription drugs are a costly medical expense, especially for the elderly, those who are chronically ill and those with no or minimal drug coverage on their Health Insurance. However, each state in America has a law that allows pharmacists to substitute less expensive generic drugs for many brand name products. Depending on your prescription needs, your savings could be very significant. Before you talk with your doctor or pharmacist about switching, there are things you should know about generic drugs.

What is the difference between a generic and brand name drug?
Nothing except for the name, packaging, and the price, a generic drug is called by its chemical name; manufacturers assign their own brand name. The generic products have the same ingredients. Standard practice and most state laws require that a generic drug be generically equivalent to its brand name counterpart. That is, it must have the same active ingredients, strength, and dosage form, be it a pill, liquid, or injection. The generic drug also must be therapeutically equivalent. It must be the same drug chemically and have the same medical effect.

Do all drugs have generic equivalents?
No. Some drugs are protected by patents and are supplied by only one company. However, when the patent expires, other manufacturers can produce its generic version. Currently, about half the drugs on the market are available in generic form.

Will my doctor automatically prescribe generic drugs?
It depends on the physician. You can ask your doctor to write a prescription permitting substitution of a generic drug product when appropriate or to define the chemical name for the prescription. This will ensure you are purchasing the correct Mexico drug. Generic products will be as effective and less costly. Or, you can order only brand name products if you wish. www.MedsMex.com.com  Mexico pharmacy offers a wide selection of both Brand Name & Generic Mexico medicine. Our Mexican generic drugs are of the highest quality, selected only from the most reputable manufacturers, and are safe to replace brand name medications costing much more.
