What is Combivent used for?
Combivent generic is an aerosol medicine containing the active ingredients Salbutamol Sulfate and Ipratropium Bromide.
Combivent medication is odorless or odorless, available as an aerosol, and prescribed for the treatment of bronchial asthma and diffuse bronchial inflammation.
Pharmacokinetics
Combivent medication after administration is rapidly absorbed through the respiratory tract. Bioavailability is about 10%. The first active ingredient in Combivent Salbutamol sulfate has the properties of decreasing the tone and secretion of the bronchi and decreasing the tone of myomometry. After use, 10-20% of the substance reaches the lower respiratory tract, which is absorbed by the pulmonary tissue and penetrates into the pulmonary vessels without being metabolized. Reaches maximum plasma concentration within 2-4 hours. It is eliminated from the body mainly with urine and less with feces.
The second active substance of Combivent generic is Ipratropium bromide, which has anticholinergic effect and acts mainly on bronchial cholinoreceptors. It cures bronchospasm in obstructive bronchitis. When used nasally, it reduces nasal secretion of fluid in allergic and non-allergic runny nose. This substance is rapidly absorbed after inhalation and its bioavailability is less than 10% of the dose taken, while not penetrating the blood-brain barrier. It is excreted by the kidneys.
Combivent generic has a simultaneous local effect on muscarinic and beta-adrenergic receptors in the lungs, resulting in a stronger bronchodilator effect. At the same time, it does not increase systemic absorption.
Combivent: dosage
Combivent medication is administered by inhalation 2 doses 4 times a day. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 12 inhalations per day. The following steps should be taken when using the drug:
- Shake the can well.
- Take a deep inhalation.
- Hold the can upright with your mouth tightly against your lips.
- Inhale deeply while firmly pressing the spray bottle to release a single measured dose. Then hold your breath for a couple of seconds and take the can out of your mouth and exhale.
- The mouthpiece should be rinsed thoroughly after use.

- Hypersensitivity to one of the active substances of the drug
- Tachyarrhythmia
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Pregnancy in the first trimester
- Children under 12 years of age

- Closed glaucoma
- Obstruction of the urinary tract
- Severe cardiovascular disease
- Decompensated diabetes mellitus
- Cystic fibrosis
- Hyperthyroidism
- Pregnancy in the second and third trimester

- Special use
Special caution should be exercised when using the drug during pregnancy. The inhibitory effect of Combivent generic on uterine contractions must also be considered. One of the active substances of the drug may penetrate the breast milk of the mother, although the effect on the newborn has not been studied, it must be considered.
In some cases, eye complications such as eye pain, increased eye pressure, dilated pupils, red eyes, colored spots in front of the eyes, or the appearance of a halo may occur if the aerosol gets into the eyes. In such a case, it is necessary to begin treatment immediately with eye drops and call your doctor.
Patients with cystic fibrosis may be more prone to gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Systematic use of higher doses may worsen the course of the disease, so it is necessary to carry out regular monitoring of respiratory failure symptoms.

Overdose

Interaction with other medications
Concomitant administration of additional anticholinergic, diuretic and other agents may enhance the bronchodilator effect of the drug on the airways and cause side effects. There may be a significant reduction in the effect of the drug. Lead to a decrease in blood pressure. Increase the cardio tropic effect of thyroid hormones. Increase intraocular pressure. Likelihood of developing tachyarrhythmia. It may worsen the side effects of using anesthesia. Therefore, the drug should be discontinued at the time of surgery.
