The active ingredient is Metronidazole - a chemotherapeutic agent from the group of imidazole derivatives, which has bactericidal and protozoicidal properties.
Metronidazole is effective against many strains of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa; it is not active against aerobic or relatively anaerobic bacteria. The action of Metronidazole on the cells of sensitive bacteria and protozoa leads to damage of DNA nucleic acids, which results in the death of the microbial cell.
Metrogel gel for external use is ineffective against telangiectasias seen in rosacea.
It is intended for topical application. Metronidazole is absorbed into the bloodstream in small amounts when applied to the skin.
When to use Metronidazole Gel?
The gel is indicated in the topical treatment of conditions such as:
- Rosacea
- Seborrheic eczema
- Mixed bacterial facial skin infections
- Dermatitis around the mouth
- Steroid rosacea
Unfortunately, even if there are indications for using the Metrogel 0.75, it cannot always be used. Do not use Metrogel.75 if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to any of the ingredients.
Metrogel for rosacea
Metrogel 0.75 (Metronidazole) is used on the skin to treat rosacea, a type of acne in adults. The drug reduces redness, swelling, and the amount of acne caused by rosacea.
Metrogel side effects
If you notice or are concerned about any serious side effects or symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction, seek medical attention right away:
- Dry or red skin, itching, burning, tingling, or worsening rosacea symptoms
- Loss of sensation or tingling sensation in fingers or toes, metallic taste in the mouth, vomiting
- Contact dermatitis

Metrogel uses
The gel is applied in a thin layer exactly to the lesion twice a day, morning and evening before going to bed. Before application, wash the skin with a mild facial cleanser. After applying the gel, the patient may use cosmetics that do not clog skin pores and do not have astringent properties.
There is no need to increase the dose in the elderly. Metrogel is not indicated in children because of the lack of safety and efficacy data.
The duration of treatment depends on the type of microorganism, localization, and severity of the infection. Usually, Metrogel generic is used for 3 to 4 months. However, if there is indisputable evidence that Metrogel generic is effective, the physician may decide to extend the treatment for an additional 3 to 4 months, depending on the severity of the changes. Treatment of rosacea with topical metronidazole has been used in clinical trials for up to 2 years. Treatment should be discontinued if there is no clear clinical improvement.
Metrogel for acne
Read the instructions in the package leaflet before use. This will reduce the chance of side effects and ensure that the drug is effective.
Metrogel acts as an antibiotic and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. The result is noticeable after about 21-30 days of application.
The number of applications per day and the amount of product to be applied to the skin depends on several factors:
- the patient's body weight, age
- the severity of the acne and the degree of skin damage
- the use of other medications
The medicine is to be used as prescribed by your doctor.
In most cases, doctors recommend applying the gel twice a day.
Metrogel 0.75 should be applied to clean skin. A thin layer of the drug is applied to the affected areas and gently rubbed in.
The period of application of the drug is determined by your doctor.
Avoid getting the drug in the eyes.
It is recommended to avoid exposing the skin to strong sunlight and sunbathing during treatment. Do not use more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.
Metrogel and alcohol
Metronidazole should not be combined with alcohol because the active ingredient increases its toxic effects. There is an increased risk of side effects such as fever, sweating, headache, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain. Therefore, it is inadvisable to consume alcohol during treatment with Metronidazole and for two days after treatment to avoid disulfiram reactions.
