- Absolute bioavailability is 99 to 100%.
- Excretion occurs mainly in unmetabolized form with the urine.
Fluoroquinolones such as Levofloxacin inhibit bacterial gyrase (topoisomerase II), which is responsible for DNA unwinding. As a result, the bacterial DNA can no longer replicate and the bacterium dies.
Levaquin: side effects
Side effects, most often occur in the form of:
- insomnia;
- headache;
- diarrhea, vomiting, nausea;
- increased liver enzymes.

Since elderly patients usually have impaired renal function, the dose should be adjusted accordingly.

Levaquin and alcohol
