Secnidazole is a worming remedy that kills and eliminates intestinal helminths that cause infections such as amoebic dysentery, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis.

Secnidazole penetrates the cell of the pathogen and is activated due to the reduction of the 5-nitrogroup, as a result of which it interacts with DNA. The helical structure is disturbed, and the filaments are destroyed, and subsequently the cell itself dies.

What does Secnidazole treat?

Children
The pediatric dosage of Secnidazole is 30 mg per kg of body weight once. Amebiasis of the liver: Secnidazole 30 mg per kg body weight daily for 5-7 days.

Contraindications for taking the drug?
This drug is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy, lactating women, and people with an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of the drug.
Interaction with other medications
Disulfiram. Paranoid reactions and psychosis may occur if used concomitantly with Disulfiram. Combination with alcohol causes disulfiram-like symptoms (abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches, hot flashes), delirium attacks, and dizziness are possible. These drugs should not be used simultaneously.
Warfarin. Concomitant use with Secnidazole may increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. If these drugs are used concomitantly, the patient's condition and prothrombin time index should be closely monitored, and the dose should be adjusted if necessary.
Lithium preparations. Concomitant use with Secnidazole may increase the plasma concentration of lithium.
Cyclosporine. Concomitant use with Secnidazole may increase plasma concentrations. Close monitoring of plasma levels of cyclosporine and creatinine should be performed when concomitant use of these drugs.
5-Fluorouracil. Concomitant use with Secnidazole increases clearance of 5-fluorouracil, which leads to increased toxicity.
Alcohol-containing drinks. Simultaneous use of Secnidazole with the use of alcoholic beverages causes the following symptoms: spastic abdominal pain, hot flashes, vomiting, and tachycardia.

Peculiarities of use
During the use of the drug and within 72 hours after cessation of the treatment, it is not recommended to drink alcohol to prevent adverse reactions similar to those which occur during Disulfiram use (painful abdominal cramps, hot flashes, vomiting, and tachycardia).
If it is necessary to use Secnidazole longer than recommended, hematologic parameters (including leukocyte counts) should be monitored. The drug should be used with caution in patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Secnidazole should be discontinued in case of the development of coordination disorders, dizziness, or confusion. Sexual intercourse should be avoided during treatment.
